The Pursuit of Greatness

Podium

“I believe greatness is an evolutionary process that changes and evolves era to era”

Michael Jordan

What are you in the pursuit of? What lights you on fire every morning? What fuels you with the energy and desire to pursue your passion?

The pursuit of GREATNESS… We bear witness to some of the greatest athletes of all time. Jordan, LeBron, Michael Phelps, Mike Trout… these are some of the best athletes to ever compete in the history of sports… but what do these star athletes have in common? What is it that they do better than anyone else in the world? Here are three secrets that all peak performers exemplify every single day!

BELIEF

This is without a doubt the most important pillar when examining the greatest athletes and coaches of all time. They have an unwavering belief in themselves that they can and will accomplish ANYTHING they set their mind to. No matter what failure or adversity comes their way, they never lose the belief that they are the greatest in the game. Belief stems from a few different key ingredients. First and foremost, do the work! The elite performers do not make excuses. They simply show up every day and put in the work. They are in the gym earlier and longer than most of their competitors and work relentlessly towards their passion. The second ingredient, ownership. The elite level athletes take extreme ownership of the mistakes and failures they make and learn how to adapt and overcome. In other words, they create a NO EXCUSE ZONE!

INTENTION

When a college coach or CEO brings you into their office, one of the first questions they are going to ask you is “why would I hire you to do this job?” One of the most overwhelming responses is “I have a great work ethic.” Do not be mistaken, this is a good thing. But most athletes and competitors present a great work ethic. They put in long hours and show up every day like they are supposed to. But what separates the good from the great is INTENTION… Think of intention as the gas in the fuel tank. We all have a destination, but without purpose and intention, we will never achieve the goals that we set out for ourselves. Working with intent is one of the best things you can do in order to accomplish your dreams!

VISION

Plain and simple, peak performers have a clear VISION. They know exactly what they are working towards and where they want to go. You might be thinking to yourself… well yeah, of course! Vision is the common separator between good and great competitors. This allows you to imagine a greater purpose for your life and gives you something to push towards on your darkest days. We all have tough days… we all experience adversity… we will all experience failure at some point in our lives… but the ones who have a clear vision are the same ones who will use that failure as a steppingstone to their greatest victories.

FINAL THOUGHTS

So think about this… what is something you have always dreamed of accomplishing one day but never had the courage to try? What is YOUR vision for your life? I challenge you to write down 1 thing that you want to accomplish someday. This can be anything from coach of the year, a Major League Baseball player, or to start your own business one day. Get creative with this and allow your mind to think deeply and intentionally about the legacy you want to leave behind!
