Leadership Development Series: The Power of Self-Reflection

As a leader, focusing on improving your team and each individual becomes effortless. Developing the players below you both on and off the field is essential, but that can lead to you forgetting about yourself. Your development as an individual is just as important as developing the players on your team. When you improve on how you are a leader, it trickles down to those who follow. Self-reflection is one of the essential tools you can utilize to improve yourself as a ladder. Self-reflection allows you to pinpoint improvement areas and learn from mistakes. Here are some ways that self-reflection can make you a better leader for your team:

  1. Find areas for improvement: This is one of the essential things that self-reflection can do to help you as a leader. It can help you find places where you can improve. When you analyze your strengths and weaknesses, you can set goals and develop strategies to improve your leadership skills. This allows you to be the best leader possible, not only for yourself but for your players.
  2. Understand your impact on others: Often, we need to remember to focus on how the things we say and the actions we take impact others around us. When you self-reflect, you take the time to understand how your behavior and actions have impacted those around you (good and bad). This can help you better understand how your leadership style works and doesn’t work with each individual and where you need to adjust your approach to support your team better. Your players will notice your adjustments and greatly respect you for acknowledging them.
  3. Builds your self-awareness: Reflecting on your leadership traits will help you become more self-aware. You gain a better understanding of your emotions, motivations, and beliefs, giving you a solid foundation to build off of. A solid foundation allows you to become more attuned to the needs and perspectives of each player on your team.
  4. Encourage growth and development: Self-reflection puts you in a growth mindset. A growth mindset allows you to accept challenges, learn from feedback and criticism, and be inspired by others. Having that growth mindset can encourage your players to reflect on their performances and seek opportunities to grow and develop to become better people.
  5. Holds you accountable: Being able to self-reflect allows you to take ownership of your actions and mistakes. You can create a culture of accountability within your team by holding yourself accountable. Your players will often follow your lead. Accountability allows you to build trust and respect among your players and foster a shared responsibility for the team’s success and failures.

Self-reflection is a primary key and essential tool for developing the self-awareness, accountability, and resilience needed to be an effective team leader. Don’t be afraid to take time to reflect on your traits as a leader and constantly seek ways to learn and grow for not just the betterment of your team but for your betterment. We are all humans and won’t always do everything perfectly. Learning allows us to grow and improve from one day to the next.
